How to Deal with Negative Vibes
Have you ever noticed how the stuff running through your head can totally affect how you feel and what you do? Thinking more positive thoughts makes us feel more calm, confident, and happy.
But if your head’s full of negative chatter, it can make you doubt yourself, your skills, and even make you feel sad and annoyed. These thoughts often sound really critical, like “Why did I eat that slice of cake?! I always mess up” or “Why didn’t I go for that walk? I’m so lazy.”
How to Cut Negative Thoughts Off
• Notice when a less helpful thought pops into your head
• Try to stay positive by having a go-to reply ready for when doubts hit. Something like: “Not again, I am not going to listen to that thought I am going to choose to believe in myself this time.”
Having a reply ready can stop you from spiralling down into a bad headspace.
Thoughts and Reality
The way we see the world is shaped by what we think, and sometimes, we get stuck with really tough thoughts that are hard to shake off.
But with a bit of effort and patience, we do get better at it over time. The trick is to challenge those unhelpful thoughts with some more realistic, positive ones.
An Example Of My Own Way of Dealing with My Negative Thoughts
I do sometimes have critical thoughts about not always looking after myself properly. Especially if I’ve gone overboard when I’m out with friends or family for a bite to eat! But I remind myself that several years ago I successfully made a lifestyle change, so when those negative thoughts come up, I tell myself it’s okay to treat myself now and then. Sometimes we might not get everything perfect, and that is totally fine.
I remind myself how easily I can get back on track in eating healthily or upping my game a little with my exercise regime. I know that thoughts about failing are just thoughts - not real life. The more I focus on how I do well most of the time, the better I feel about myself. That helps me remember all the good changes I have made and maintained and makes me want to continue on that track.
I don’t dwell on the negatives because that might make me give up and go back to old, unhealthy habits. Instead, I stay focused on the real, positive progress I’ve achieved so far. I can acknowledge I don’t always get it right but that is ok.
